Detailed Interview with Shane Guerra: Insights from a Commercial Roofing Expert

Q: Could you tell us about your initial entry into commercial roofing?

A: I began my journey in commercial roofing by taking a position as a production manager with J & T Developers in Texas. This role provided a comprehensive foundation in the complexities of commercial roofing. I started as a roofing production assistant and moved up to commercial roofing production manager. I eventually did everything associated with the project from the initial inspection, to estimating, to ordering materials and permits, and scheduling the job. I would then go out in the field and perform quality control and I did this for a few years.

Q: What was your professional background prior to entering the roofing industry?

A: Before I ventured into roofing, I was engaged in entirely different work. I was a city employee, working as a truck driver. My transition into roofing was largely influenced by a friend who was involved in insurance restoration for a roofing company. He noticed my dissatisfaction with my then-job and encouraged me to consider roofing because of its dynamic nature and the opportunities it presented in sales and project management. I am very grateful to my friend to help me get out of the job I was in and into a career that I have found very rewarding both personally and professionally.

Q: What were some of the key positions you held before starting your own company?

A: After my initial stint in Texas, I held several pivotal roles that spanned both commercial and residential roofing sectors. I was heavily involved in production, where I gained valuable hands-on experience that proved instrumental in understanding the full lifecycle of roofing projects. Over the years, I progressed through various roles, which included project management and sales, providing a well-rounded perspective on the industry.  These experiences helped me to learn the value of customer service and I place a very high priority on customer service and prioritize the customers goals for the project.

Q: What motivated you to start your own roofing company, and when did this transition happen?

A: In 2018, after accumulating extensive experience and industry knowledge, I decided to establish my own roofing business. My primary motivation was to focus on commercial roofing and roof coatings, areas where I saw significant growth potential and the ability to leverage my expertise to provide specialized services.  Together with my crew I personally applied thousands of squares of roof coatings and managed numerous commercial roofing replacements and restorations.

Q: Why did you choose to specialize in roof coatings?

A: Roof coatings appealed to me because they represented a niche market with less competition back in 2018. The decision to specialize in this area was strategic; it allowed me to position my business as a turnkey applicator, offering both labor and materials. This specialization not only set my business apart but also facilitated partnerships with other contractors, enhancing our service capabilities through collaboration.

Q: Can you elaborate on your credentials and what makes you an expert in roof coatings?

A: Over the years, I’ve acquired several certifications from leading manufacturers like Gaco Roofing Products and Tropical Roofing Products. These aren’t just participation certificates; they require documented experience with a significant volume of applied product, ensuring that certified applicators like myself not only understand the theory but also excel in the practical application of roof coatings across diverse projects.

Q: What is critical about understanding roof compatibility with coatings?

A: Expertise in roof coatings extends beyond application techniques; it also involves a thorough understanding of substrate compatibility and the overall condition of the existing roof. This knowledge is crucial because it influences the longevity and effectiveness of the coating applied. It’s about assessing whether a roof is a suitable candidate for a coating, which involves understanding the material properties, age, and condition of the roof.

Q: Throughout your career, what challenges have you encountered, and how have you addressed them?

A: One of the main challenges was navigating the transition from an employee to a business owner, which involved understanding the broader business landscape of commercial roofing. Addressing these challenges required a strategic approach to business management and a deep dive into market trends, customer needs, and effective marketing strategies.

Q: How do you perceive the future of roofing and coatings?

A: The roofing industry, particularly the coatings segment, is poised for growth as more building owners recognize the cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of roof coatings. Staying at the forefront of this growth curve requires ongoing education and adaptation to new materials and application technologies. It’s about continuous improvement and adapting to meet the changing needs of the market.
